About the New Bern and Havelock North Carolina Areas

Tryon Palace was originally built between 1767 and 1770, as the first permanent capitol of the Colony of North Carolina.
The New Bern Civic Theatre is devoted to the performing arts. It serves as a vital artistic resource for the people of Eastern North Carolina.

New Bern is the second oldest town in North Carolina, and is located where the Trent and Neuse Rivers meet. New Bern is filled with history around every corner with over 150 historic landmarks, such as Tryon Palace, the Birth Place of Pepsi, and a 157,000-acre national forest.

The New Bern centerpiece, is the historic Tryon Palace and its gardens. Built in 1770, this was the home of British Royal Governor William Tryon, making New Bern the original capital of North Carolina.

While in New Bern, visit the Birthplace of Pepsi, the Firemen's Museum, and the Bank of the Arts. Stroll through our downtown, filled with specialty shops and restaurants, or relax on a historic Trolley Tour. Sail on our endless rivers, or golf at one of the beautiful championship courses in the New Bern and Havelock areas. Other outdoor activities could include camping or hiking through the 157,000-acres of Croatan National Forest.

Fresh local produce is available in the historic New Bern Farmer's Market. Also a location for community gatherings and events. Can be rented for spec

New Bern and Craven County offer many cultural, educational and historical attractions. An "All Attractions Pass" is available to tour the Tryon Palace, Firemen's Museum, and ride the Trolley Tour through historic New Bern. The pass can be purchased at the New Bern Convention and Visitors Center.

The Firemen's Museum preserves artifacts and records relating to firefighting and to the New Bern Fire Department, the first fire department in North Carolina. The museum interprets firefighting equipment and department history for the education of present and future generations.

The museum documents New Bern's rich firefighting history, starting with

Cherry Point, North Carolina
Cherry Point is one of the best all weather jet bases in the world. The air station and its associated support locations occupy more than 29,000 acres

Havelock is proud to be the home of Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, the 2nd Marine Air Wing and Naval Air Depot, located in Eastern North Carolina, midway between historic New Bern and the beautiful beaches of the Crystal Coast.

Havelock has much to offer residents and visitors alike. A city of 22,500, Havelock blends old fashioned Southern hospitality with a diversified population, making this a great place to live, or visit.

Real Estate Tips
Tax Considerations >Tax Implications of Selling Your House

Most of my clients profit from selling their homes, and they often have questions about capital gains tax. When you sell your primary residence, you are not taxed on your profit if (1) you have lived in the home for two out of the last five years and (2) your gain does not exceed $250,000 as a single taxpayer or $500,000 as a married couple filing jointly. Gains above these limits are taxed at the current rate of 15% for higher income taxpayers and 5% for lower income taxpayers. In 2008 the 15% rate will continue for higher income taxpayers; while the 5% lower income rate will drop to 0% for the 2008 tax year only. On January 1, 2009, the long-term capital gains tax rates will once again be 15% and 5% through 2010. Homeowners can use this tax-free provision every two years. As set forth in the American Job Creation Act of 2004, properties converted from a 1031 exchange property into a primary residence must be held and used as a primary residence for at least five years to qualify for the tax exemption. Consult your tax accountant for more detailed information regarding your particular circumstance.
